WHY HAND-CRAFTED FURNITURE

Thomas Cummings, owner of Thomas Cummings Woodworks and master craftsman, planing a piece of mahogany for use in a custom armoire.

By selecting hand-crafted furniture, you are not only choosing furniture that is uniquely yours, you are also choosing furniture of heirloom quality. Thomas Cummings Woodworks are made to last for generations with a look and “glow” that are impossible to find in the typical furniture showrooms.

We make one piece at a time employing many of the techniques and time-tested joinery methods of woodworkers of old; improving on them only if it translates into a superior product. We start with a design that fits your style and size needs. Then, together we select the perfect wood for the job. We use only the finest North American hardwoods and exotics. We painstakingly fit the grain patterns – an attention to detail that brings out the true beauty of the wood.

All of our flat surfaces are hand planed and scraped to give a deeper clarity and smoothness. Nothing can match the clarity of finish that a razor sharp blade imparts to the polish of wood. Our pieces are made with intricate details and inlays that can only be found in antiques and in today’s hand-crafted studio furniture. We create furniture-as-art that shows complexity and beautifies your home.

Then, we finish our pieces with a coat of hand-rubbed oil, which brings out some of the more subtle nuances of the wood while imparting a slight amber hue. Since oil highlights the grain of a piece, only a piece that has been exquisitely and expertly finished can be treated with hand-rubbed oil. To ensure a lifetime of protection we spray three coats of “conversion varnish” over the oil to protect its surfaces without making the furniture look as if it’s encased in plastic.

You’ll know the quality of our furniture by its timeless look and the glow of the wood.

Your Thomas Cummings hand-crafted furniture will be passed from generation to generation to give your family use and beauty.

Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years after.
And for this reason, some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of the men who made them.
